What is Payment Descriptor?

A payment descriptor is the short line of text a card or bank transaction leaves on a statement, naming whoever took the money. It is what a player reads weeks later, scanning the month's charges and trying to work out what each one was. It is often not the name of the site where the deposit was made. The descriptor is set by the acquiring bank and the processor that handled the transaction, not by the brand the player saw. A gambling deposit therefore turns up under a payment company's trading name, the legal name of the holding company behind the site, a shortened code, or a city that means nothing to the person reading it. Where an operator routes through more than one processor, two deposits on the same site in the same week can carry two different descriptors. This is why deposits get disputed by the people who made them, and why a support agent's first question is the exact string on the statement: it identifies which processor to look at. Note the descriptor once, after the first deposit, with the date and amount beside it, and later statements stay readable. A statement full of unrecognised strings is also why a player trying to see their own spending loses track of it.
