What is Soft Decline?

A soft decline is a card refusal that is meant to be retried. The issuing bank has not said no to the transaction itself; it has said no to this attempt, usually because it wants additional authentication before letting the payment through. The correct response is another attempt with that authentication attached, not a different card. It matters because it is routinely mistaken for a hard decline, which is the opposite instruction. A hard decline means the card is closed, the details are wrong, the funds are absent or the bank has blocked gambling on it, and retrying that changes nothing while adding failed attempts to your record. Soft declines are the common case for gambling deposits in markets where strong customer authentication is mandatory: the first attempt is refused, the second attempt carries a Three-D Secure step, and it succeeds. What a player actually sees rarely says which one happened. A cashier tends to print one generic message for both, so the useful signal is behaviour: if the bank sends a verification prompt or the retry goes straight through, it was soft. If three attempts fail identically with no prompt, it is hard, and the fix is with the bank rather than with the casino.
