What is M-Pesa?

M-Pesa is a mobile-phone-based money transfer and payment service operated by Safaricom, launched in Kenya and since extended to several other African countries. Rather than relying on a bank account or card, it lets users store and move value directly through their registered mobile number, with transactions confirmed by SMS. In Kenya it is the dominant consumer payment rail, used by the large majority of adults.
