M-Pesa is a mobile-phone-based money transfer and payment service operated by Safaricom, launched in Kenya and since extended to several other African countries. Rather than relying on a bank account or card, it lets users store and move value directly through their registered mobile number, with transactions confirmed by SMS. In Kenya it is the dominant consumer payment rail, used by the large majority of adults.
For online gambling this makes M-Pesa effectively essential in the Kenyan market: an operator without M-Pesa integration loses access to most potential customers, because cards and bank transfers reach a far smaller share of the population. A typical flow has the player initiate a deposit, authorise it via an STK push prompt or a paybill number on their handset, and see the casino balance credited within seconds. Withdrawals back to M-Pesa are usually processed within minutes, which is part of its appeal.
Why it matters: for any affiliate or operator targeting East Africa, M-Pesa support is a primary determinant of conversion, and its presence or absence can make or break performance in the region. The practical caveats are local rather than technical: transaction and daily limits apply, small per-transaction fees are common, and players should always confirm the official paybill number to avoid sending funds to a fraudulent intermediary. From a responsible-gambling perspective, the speed and ubiquity of mobile money make pre-set deposit limits especially worthwhile. See also payment methods, deposit and withdrawal.
