What is Licence Suspension?

A licence suspension is a regulator halting an operator's ability to trade while a matter is investigated. It sits between a condition, which restricts how a licence may be used, and a revocation, which ends it. A suspension is temporary by definition and can end in either direction: reinstatement, sometimes with new conditions attached, or revocation. What it looks like from the outside is abrupt. The site may stop accepting deposits, stop offering games, or go offline entirely, often with little notice, because the regulator's instruction takes effect on a date rather than after a transition. Regulators generally require an operator to allow withdrawals of player balances during a suspension, which is a rule that matters exactly as much as it is enforced and the funds exist to satisfy it. That last point is why segregation of player funds is a related question rather than a separate one. A suspension can be triggered by an anti-money-laundering failing, a social-responsibility failing, a licence-condition breach or a solvency concern, and only the last of those directly threatens the balance in your account — but from outside a closed website they look identical. The practical steps are the same in every case. Regulators publish suspensions on a public register, so the licence lookup for that regulator is the first place to check rather than the operator's own homepage or its social media. Withdraw what you can, keep a record of the balance and any correspondence, and if the operator does not pay, the complaint route runs through the regulator and any approved dispute body named in the terms.
