What is PromptPay?

PromptPay is Thailand's national instant-transfer service, operated under the Bank of Thailand's payment framework. Money moves between Thai bank accounts in seconds, at any hour, addressed by a national ID number, a mobile number or a QR code rather than by account details. Small transfers are typically free, which is why it has become the default way to move money domestically. Its relevance to gambling is almost entirely a legal one. Online gambling is illegal in Thailand under the Gambling Act, and there is no domestic licensing route for it. Transfers identified as going to gambling merchants are therefore subject to blocking, and Thai banks act on accounts linked to illegal gambling activity — the risk attaches to the bank account rather than to any particular website. That produces a specific and predictable failure pattern. A deposit method appearing at a cashier is a statement about that operator's payment integrations, not about legality where the player is, and a rail that works one week may be refused the next as intermediaries are cut off. A withdrawal route that depends on the same rail can close while a balance is still sitting behind it. This entry describes how the system works and the position it sits in. It does not recommend using it for gambling, and the legal position in Thailand should be established before anything else is considered.
