UKGC

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is the statutory body that regulates all commercial gambling in Great Britain. A UKGC licence is mandatory for any operator accepting British customers, and the regime is among the strictest in the world: it mandates affordability checks, tight advertising standards, anti-money-laundering controls, responsible-gambling tools such as deposit limits and self-exclusion, and broad player-protection obligations. Affiliates marketing to UK audiences must also operate within the Commission's rules, and promoting an unlicensed operator to British consumers is a serious breach. A defining recent development was the rollout of enhanced affordability and financial-risk checks from 2024 onward, requiring operators to assess whether players losing above certain thresholds can sustain those losses without harm. Worked example: an affiliate running a UK-facing review site must verify that every operator it lists holds a current UKGC licence — checkable on the Commission's public register — before publishing. It must avoid implying gambling is a solution to money problems, must not target under-25s or vulnerable users, and must display age (18+) and responsible-gambling messaging such as GamCare or the National Gambling Helpline. Listing an offshore brand without a GB licence, or running a misleading 'risk-free' bonus claim, can trigger enforcement against both operator and affiliate. Why it matters: the UKGC backs its rules with large fines and licence revocations, and its expectations extend up the marketing chain to affiliates. The common mistake is assuming a brand licensed elsewhere (for example in another European jurisdiction) may lawfully take British customers — it may not without a UKGC licence.
