Void rules are the conditions a bookmaker publishes that determine when a bet is cancelled and the stake refunded in full, with no win or loss recorded. They form part of the operator's terms and conditions and cover situations where a market cannot be settled fairly: a fixture postponed or abandoned, a non-runner in a horse race, a named player failing to take part, a minimum-play threshold not being reached, or an obvious pricing error. When any listed trigger applies, the selection is voided and the money returned exactly as staked.
The precise wording matters because void rules vary by operator and by sport. One book may void a match not completed within 48 hours; another allows 72. In tennis, some settle retirements as a loss if the first set is complete, while others void the whole bet. Player-prop markets are frequently voided if the athlete does not start, whereas some outrights stand once the tournament begins.
Worked example: you stake 20 EUR on a football over/under 2.5 goals market. The match is postponed after a floodlight failure and not replayed within the operator's 48-hour window. Under its void rules the bet is cancelled and the full 20 EUR returns to your balance. Inside a four-fold accumulator, that leg is simply removed and the odds recalculated on the three survivors, rather than the whole bet being lost.
As an affiliate, flagging clear void policies helps players avoid disputes, since the most common mistake is assuming a bet stands when the operator's rulebook actually voids it. Always read the sport-specific settlement terms before staking. Compare with void bet, dead heat and Rule 4.
