Acca insurance is a bookmaker promotion that refunds your stake, usually as a free bet, when exactly one leg of a qualifying accumulator lets you down. The offer exists to soften the sting of a "so close" acca — the classic case where four of your five selections win and a single upset costs you the whole return. Terms vary between operators, but the standard shape is a refund up to a capped amount (commonly £10 to £25) on accumulators of five or more legs, priced at a minimum odds per selection.
Worked example: you place a £10 five-fold with legs at 1.80, 2.00, 1.50, 2.20 and 1.90 under an "acca insurance up to £20, five-plus legs, one leg lets you down" offer. Four legs win but the 2.20 shot loses. Because precisely one selection failed, you receive your £10 stake back — typically as a free bet, not cash. Had two legs lost, no refund would apply. And because it arrives as a free bet, the stake is not returned in any winnings, so its real value is roughly 70-80% of face value.
Why it matters: acca insurance improves the effective value of accumulator betting, but only within tight rules — minimum legs, minimum odds per leg, void-leg handling and a refund cap. A void selection often reduces your acca below the qualifying leg count, killing the insurance entirely.
The common mistake is assuming the refund is cash, or adding a token short-priced leg purely to hit the leg minimum and inadvertently breaching the odds requirement. Always read the qualifying conditions first. Compare with accumulator insurance, the accumulator, free bets and risk-free bets.
