Risk-Free Bet
BonusesA risk-free bet is a sportsbook promotion that refunds your first losing wager as a free bet or bet credits, up to a stated cap.
A risk-free bet is a sportsbook promotion that refunds your first qualifying wager, up to a stated cap, if it loses, so a losing first bet costs you nothing. The refund is almost never returned as withdrawable cash: it comes as bonus funds, a free bet, or bet credits, and those carry their own conditions before any resulting winnings can be cashed out.
Worked example: you claim a "risk-free bet up to $50" and stake $50 at odds of 2.00 (evens). If the bet wins, you collect $100 and keep the full profit as normal. If it loses, the book credits you a $50 free bet as a refund. When you place that $50 free bet, most operators return only the net winnings, not the stake, so a winning free bet at 2.00 pays $50 rather than $100. Your true downside was therefore not zero but the gap between the cash value and what the free bet ultimately realises.
For players, the label oversells the offer: read whether the refund is cash or a free bet, the minimum odds required to qualify, any rollover on winnings, and the expiry window. Free bets typically must be used in one stake and cannot be split. For affiliates, "risk-free" wording is increasingly restricted by regulators such as the UKGC, and some markets require it be described as a bonus or bet credit instead.
The safest approach is to treat the refund as a bet credit with strings attached, not as your money back, and to compare the effective value against a straightforward first-deposit bonus.
