Free Bet
BonusesA free bet is a bookmaker token that stakes a wager without your own money; if it wins you keep the profit but not the stake amount.
A free bet is a bookmaker token that lets you place a wager without staking your own money, but crucially the stake itself is not returned in your winnings — if the bet wins, you keep only the profit. This makes a free bet worth less than a cash bet of the same face value, because a real £10 bet returns your £10 stake plus profit, whereas a £10 free bet returns profit alone.
Free bets are the most common sportsbook promotion, used to acquire and retain customers, and they typically arrive with conditions: a minimum-odds requirement (often 1/2 or 1.50 and above), an expiry window, and rules on which markets qualify.
Worked example: you hold a £20 free bet and place it on a selection at odds of 3.00 (2/1). A winning £20 cash bet would return £60 (£40 profit plus your £20 stake). With the free bet, the £20 stake is deducted, so you receive £40 profit only. If the bet loses, you lose nothing beyond the token. This "stake-not-returned" rule means the effective value of a free bet is roughly 70-80% of its face value at typical odds, and it climbs at higher odds where profit dominates the stake.
For players, higher odds extract more value from a free bet, since the returned profit is larger relative to the withheld stake; splitting a large token across several bets is usually not allowed. Affiliates should present the stake-not-returned mechanic clearly rather than implying face-value cash. Compare with the risk-free bet, bet credits and matched betting.
