Anti-Money Laundering (AML) refers to the legal and regulatory frameworks requiring gambling operators to identify, monitor and report financial activity that could indicate the laundering of criminal proceeds. Because gambling moves large sums of cash quickly, regulated operators are treated as obliged entities and must run a risk-based AML programme. Core obligations typically include: Know Your Customer (KYC) identity verification at sign-up and at withdrawal; ongoing transaction monitoring for unusual patterns; source-of-funds and source-of-wealth checks once a customer's deposits or losses cross defined thresholds; sanctions and politically-exposed-person screening; and the filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) with the relevant financial-intelligence unit. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) sets the international standards that most national gambling regulators transpose into their own rules. Worked example of a trigger: a new player deposits, places only minimal low-risk wagers, then requests to withdraw the balance to a different payment method. This "deposit, barely play, cash out" pattern is a classic laundering red flag. The operator must freeze the withdrawal, request documented proof of the source of funds, and may file a SAR — without tipping off the customer that a report has been made. Why it matters to a player: AML is the usual reason a withdrawal is paused while documents are requested, even when nothing is wrong. Providing clear identification and funding evidence promptly is the fastest route to release. Common misconception: that these checks are arbitrary obstruction. They are legal requirements; an operator that ignored them would risk heavy fines or licence loss. Refusing to supply requested documents will simply stall the payout indefinitely.
