What is Ante Bet?

An ante bet is an optional mode that raises the cost of every spin in exchange for a better chance of reaching the game's main feature. The usual implementation increases the stake by a set proportion — commonly a quarter or a half again — and in return improves the frequency with which scatters or bonus symbols appear. It sits between ordinary play and a bonus buy. A bonus buy pays a lump sum to enter the feature immediately; an ante bet pays a smaller amount on every spin to make the feature arrive sooner on average, without guaranteeing it. Because the increase applies to each spin rather than once, the total spent climbs quickly, and a run of spins without the feature costs more than the same run would have at the base stake. Whether the mode is worth using depends on something the player usually cannot see: whether the game's published return is the same in both modes. Some studios state a different figure for ante play, and where they do, the honest comparison is between those two figures rather than between the trigger frequencies. Where no separate figure is published, the mode changes the shape of the session — more feature rounds, each costing more to reach — rather than the long-run return. In several regulated markets ante bets are restricted or banned outright alongside bonus buys, so the option may simply not appear.
