Ways To Win is a slot payout system where wins are awarded for matching symbols on adjacent reels in any row position, rather than along fixed, pre-set paylines. If a game advertises "243 ways to win," a matching symbol landing anywhere on consecutive reels from the leftmost reel pays out, regardless of which row it occupies. This replaces the older payline model, where symbols had to land on a specific, purchased line to count.
The ways figure is calculated by multiplying the number of symbol positions on each reel. A standard 5-reel grid with 3 rows gives 3×3×3×3×3 = 243 ways. A 5-reel grid with 4 rows on each reel yields 4×4×4×4×4 = 1,024 ways. Some engines expand rows dynamically, which is how Megaways titles reach up to 117,649 ways within a single spin.
Worked example: on a 243-ways slot, you stake a fixed £0.50 per spin covering all 243 ways (unlike paylines, you cannot bet on fewer). Suppose a symbol pays 5x your bet-per-way for three-of-a-kind. If it lands on reels 1, 2 and 3 in two separate adjacent-row combinations, both count, and the theoretical RTP already factors this frequency in. More ways generally mean more frequent small wins but not necessarily higher volatility.
For players comparing games, note that "more ways" does not mean better value on its own: RTP and volatility determine long-term return, not the headline ways count. Always check the paytable for how each symbol pays across the ways structure.
