Megaways is a patented slot engine created by Big Time Gaming in which the number of symbols on each reel is randomised on every spin. Instead of a fixed grid, the reels display a variable height, and the count of ways to win recalculates spin by spin. With six reels each showing between two and seven symbols, the maximum configuration produces 7 to the power of 6, or 117,649, ways to win on a single spin.
Worked example: ways-to-win are calculated by multiplying the symbol count on each reel together. If the reels land showing 4, 5, 6, 4, 3 and 2 symbols respectively, that spin offers 4 x 5 x 6 x 4 x 3 x 2 = 2,880 ways to win, and wins are paid for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel, regardless of row. The next spin might show an entirely different set of heights and therefore a different number of ways. The mechanic debuted in Bonanza in 2016 and has since been licensed to hundreds of studios.
Why it matters: the huge and shifting way count, frequently combined with cascading reels and rising multipliers, gives Megaways titles a distinctive high-variance feel — many small hits punctuated by rare large ones. A common misconception is that more ways to win means a higher RTP or better odds; it does not. The provider sets the RTP independently, and many Megaways games carry high volatility, so bankrolls can swing sharply. Check the published RTP and volatility rating rather than assuming the headline figure of 117,649 implies generosity. See also cascading reels, multiplier and RTP.
