Seed

In provably fair gambling, seeds are the cryptographic inputs that generate each game result and let a player verify, after the fact, that the outcome was not tampered with. There are two. The server seed is created by the casino but shown to the player in hashed form before any bet, committing the casino to a value it cannot later change without the hash failing to match. The client seed is supplied or controlled by the player — often a random string or password — so the casino cannot have pre-computed the result, because it could not know the player's input in advance. Worked example: before you bet, the casino displays the SHA-256 hash of its server seed, a fingerprint that reveals nothing about the seed but pins it down. You set a client seed, and each bet attaches an incrementing counter called the nonce (bet one uses nonce 0, bet two nonce 1, and so on). The three together — server seed, client seed, nonce — pass through a deterministic algorithm to produce a verifiable result. When ready, the casino reveals the full server seed; you hash it to confirm it matches the earlier fingerprint, then re-run the algorithm to confirm each result was exactly what the inputs dictated. Seeds matter because they make Provably Fair gaming genuinely auditable rather than a marketing slogan. The common mistake is assuming provably fair means the game is beatable — it does not. Verification only proves the result was not manipulated; the underlying House Edge is unchanged, so the casino still wins over time. A further caveat: always check the hash after the server seed is revealed, since the proof is only meaningful if you perform it.
