What is Expanding Symbol?

An expanding symbol is any symbol that grows to cover a full reel or a full row rather than sitting in one position. The mechanic is best known through the expanding wild, but the more interesting version applies it to ordinary paying symbols, and the two behave quite differently. An expanding wild helps every combination on the board, because it substitutes. An expanding paying symbol helps only combinations of itself, so what it is worth depends entirely on which symbol expanded — a top symbol filling a reel can be transformative, a low card filling the same reel usually is not. Many games therefore decide the identity in advance: a bonus round that picks one symbol to be the expanding one for the whole round, or a marker that lands on symbols during play and expands them only when they are already part of a win. That last condition is the part players most often misread. In most implementations the symbol does not expand simply for landing; it expands after a win has been formed, which enlarges an existing win rather than creating one from nothing. The distinction matters when reading a feature list, because a game advertising expanding symbols on every spin and a game expanding them only inside free spins are offering two very different things at the same headline return.
