A five-reel slot has five vertical columns of symbols, typically three or four rows deep, and is the standard layout for modern video slots. The extra columns allow far more combinations than a three-reel game, which is why five-reel titles support 10 to 50 paylines, 243 ways to win, or larger ways and cluster systems. They also leave room for wilds, scatters and bonus symbols to land on specific reels, so most feature rounds are built around this shape. Winning lines usually need three or more matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel, unless the game pays both ways. More reels and more lines mean more ways to win, but also a higher stake per spin, since each line is funded separately.
