What is Reel?

Reels are the vertical columns of symbols that define a slot machine. When a player spins, the reels appear to rotate and then stop on a combination of symbols; on modern machines the result is decided by a Random Number Generator the instant the spin is triggered, with the visible spinning being presentation rather than a live mechanical draw. The format has evolved without changing this underlying principle. Early mechanical slots used three physical reels, each a metal hoop carrying a fixed set of symbols. Contemporary video slots simulate five or six reels on a screen and are not constrained by the physical limit on how many symbols a hoop can hold. This freedom lets designers place many symbols per reel and weight them unevenly, which shapes how often each symbol appears. Reel configuration drives the prize structure together with the Payline or ways-to-win system layered on top. The number of reels, the number of symbol positions on each, and the relative frequency of high- and low-value symbols together determine the total set of possible combinations and therefore the long-run payout profile. Two games with the same five-by-three grid can play very differently depending on how their reel strips are weighted. A persistent misconception is that the symbols a player can see imply equal chances, so that any combination on screen is as likely as any other. In reality the reel weighting is deliberately uneven, and a near miss where a jackpot symbol stops just above or below the payline is not evidence that a win was close. Each spin is an independent draw governed by the RNG, and the reels merely display its outcome.
