What is Reel Strip?

A reel strip is the ordered list of symbols that makes up one reel. It is not the three or four symbols visible in the window; it is the full sequence behind them, which may run to dozens or hundreds of positions, and from which the game selects a stopping point every spin. The strip is where a slot's odds physically live. How many high-paying symbols are on it, how far apart they sit, how many blanks separate them and whether a given symbol appears on that reel at all are all decided by the strip, and all of them together produce the return, the hit frequency and the volatility a studio publishes. A game with the same visible symbols on two reels can behave completely differently depending on how each strip is composed. Modern slots usually add a layer on top. Where an old machine had a physical reel with a fixed number of stops, software can map many virtual positions onto one visible one, so a symbol can be made rarer or more common without changing what the player sees. That mapping is a weighting, and it is why counting symbols on screen tells you nothing reliable about their frequency. Strips are not published. They live in the PAR sheet, which studios treat as commercially sensitive, so the practical position is the same as it is for every other underlying figure: the studio's stated return and hit frequency are summaries of a document you cannot inspect, and no third party has a way to derive the strip by watching the game.
