A random wild is a wild symbol that the game engine drops onto one or more randomly chosen reel positions during a spin or respin, substituting for other symbols to create extra winning combinations. Unlike a wild that appears only on specific reels or as part of a fixed reel strip, a random wild is injected by the random number generator (RNG) after the reels have landed, so its placement and quantity vary from spin to spin.
Random wilds are a common base-game and feature mechanic in modern video slots, often branded with names like "Wild on Wilds" or tied to a character animation that scatters wilds across the grid. They can turn an otherwise dead spin into a payout, and games sometimes stack several at once or trigger a respin so the newly added wilds can complete a line.
Worked example: on a 5x3 slot paying left to right, you land A-A-blank-A-A on the top payline for no win. The feature then adds a random wild to reel 3. The wild substitutes for the missing A, completing 5-of-a-kind. If that combination pays 10x your 0.50 EUR stake, you collect 5.00 EUR from a spin that would otherwise have returned nothing.
The frequency and generosity of random wilds are already priced into a slot's return to player (RTP) and volatility, so a game advertising them is not inherently more profitable, only structured differently. Read the paytable to see whether random wilds carry multipliers or expand, as this changes their real value.
Compare with the wild symbol, the expanding wild, the sticky wild and the walking wild, and see how a respin interacts with newly placed wilds.
