Reel Set

A reel set is the full collection of virtual reel strips a slot game loads for a given mode. Each strip is an ordered list of symbols; the game reads a position on every strip to produce the visible grid. How many times a symbol appears on a strip decides how often it lands, so the reel set, not the picture on screen, determines the game's mathematics. Many slots use more than one reel set: a base-game set, and a different one during free spins holding more high-value symbols, wilds or scatters. Players never see the strips, which is why near misses, where a top symbol stops just above the payline, look meaningful yet carry no information about the next spin.
