What is RNG?

A random number generator, or RNG, is the algorithm that determines the outcome of online casino games such as slots, virtual table games and instant-win titles. It produces sequences of numbers at high speed, each mapped to a game result, and the value present at the moment a player commits to a spin or deal fixes that outcome. Everything visible on screen afterwards is presentation of a result that has already been decided. In regulated online gambling these systems are not taken on trust. Certified RNGs are tested by independent laboratories, with names such as eCOGRA, iTech Labs and GLI among the recognised testing houses, to confirm that outputs are statistically random and that the game pays at its stated rate over the long run. Certification is a standard licensing requirement, and reputable operators display the relevant approvals. It is important to separate randomness from generosity. An RNG guarantees that results are unpredictable and unbiased; it does not make a game player-favourable. The long-run return is set by the game's Return to Player and house edge, which are properties of how the maths is configured, not flaws in the RNG. A 96% RTP slot with a perfectly fair RNG still keeps 4% of stakes on average. The persistent misconception is that an RNG runs in 'hot' and 'cold' cycles, so that a machine is due to pay after a dry spell or bound to cool after a win. Because each draw is independent, past results carry no influence over the next, and no pattern of timing, stake changes or game switching alters the underlying odds. The RNG ensures fairness; it does not create exploitable streaks.
