What is Scatter?

A scatter is a special slot symbol that pays without needing to appear on an active Payline. As the name suggests, it can be scattered anywhere across the reels and still count, which sets it apart from ordinary symbols that must line up in a defined pattern. In most games the scatter is also the key that unlocks the slot's bonus content. Its two main functions are paying directly and triggering features. Landing three or more scatters typically awards a round of free spins or opens a bonus game, and the required number, often three, four or five, is set out in the Paytable. Scatter payouts are usually calculated as a multiple of the total bet rather than the line bet, which makes them more valuable than a comparable line win. If the paytable states that three scatters pay five times the total bet and you are spinning at 2.00, that award is 5 x 2.00 = 10, regardless of where on the reels the scatters fell.
