What is Symbol Weighting?

Symbol weighting is the deliberate assignment of different selection probabilities to the symbols on a slot's reels, so that some land far more often than others. Without weighting, every symbol on a strip would appear equally often and the paytable alone would set the return. In practice a designer decides both halves: how much each combination pays, and how often it is allowed to occur. Low-value fruit or card symbols carry heavy weights; the top-paying symbol and the scatter carry very light ones. The two decisions together produce the target return to player. For a player this explains a common misreading. A paytable showing a 5,000x combination is describing what that line pays, not how reachable it is, and two games can advertise the same headline multiplier while weighting it into completely different odds. Weighting also differs between a game's base mode and its bonus round, which is why free spins feel like a different game rather than more of the same one.
