What is Symbol Upgrade?

A symbol upgrade is a slot feature that promotes low-value symbols to higher-paying ones, either across the whole grid or on selected reels, before the win is calculated. Games implement it in several ways: a random modifier that removes the lowest symbol from the reel set for the rest of a free-spins round, a collection meter that upgrades one symbol tier each time it fills, or a bonus round that starts with the cheapest card symbols already stripped out. Upgrades are most valuable in free spins, where the effect persists across many spins rather than a single one. As with every enhancement, the cost is built in elsewhere in the maths: an upgraded symbol set is balanced by lower base-game frequency or a harder feature trigger, so the published RTP does not rise because a game upgrades symbols.
