What is Staggered Reels?

Staggered reels are reels of unequal height on the same grid — three positions on the first, four on the second, five in the middle, and back down again, or any other arrangement the studio chooses. The board is not a rectangle, and that is a mathematical decision rather than a decorative one. The arithmetic follows directly. On a ways-to-win game the number of ways is the heights multiplied together, so 3 x 4 x 5 x 4 x 3 gives 720 ways rather than the 243 a uniform five-by-three would give. Because the outer reels are shortest, a five-symbol combination has to survive the narrowest columns, which is why staggered grids often pair a generous-looking ways count with a modest hit frequency. On a payline game the effect is different again: a reel with more rows holds more positions for a stacked symbol to occupy. Two things are worth checking on a staggered game. First, whether the shape is fixed or grows during a feature, because a grid that gains a row in free spins changes the ways count for the round. Second, how the site you are reading records the layout: a single grid figure like five-by-five can hide an irregular board completely, and the honest notation gives the per-reel heights.
