3-Reel Slot

A three-reel slot is a game laid out with three vertical columns of symbols, the format used by the earliest mechanical machines and kept alive in classic online titles. Most have one payline across the centre, though some offer three, five or nine. With only three positions to fill, winning combinations need three matching symbols instead of five, and paytables are short. Fewer reels does not mean better value: the frequency of each symbol on a reel strip is weighted by the developer, and the game's long-run return comes from that weighting rather than from the number of columns. Three-reel games often pay a large share of their return through a single top combination, which produces long runs of losing spins between hits.
