What is Stacked Symbol?

A stacked symbol is one symbol filling several adjacent positions on the same reel, often the whole reel. It is different from a stacked wild, which is the same idea applied specifically to the wild, and different again from a colossal symbol, which is one oversized symbol spanning several reels. Stacking changes the shape of results rather than their total. Because a stack fills a reel, either every line through that reel carries the symbol or none does, which produces two outcomes far more often than a mixed reel would: a board that pays across many lines at once, or a board that pays nothing at all. That is a variance increase, and it is why studios building around stacks usually pair them with a modest ceiling — the swing is already in the mechanic. The part worth remembering is that a full reel of a symbol is not evidence of anything about that symbol's frequency. Stacks are built into the reel strip as runs of the same symbol, so a stack landing is one entry on the strip stopping in view, not several separate hits. Counting stacked symbols on screen and inferring how common they are gets the arithmetic exactly backwards. Some games apply stacking to a randomly selected symbol before each spin, which makes almost every board look busy without touching the published return at all. Others reserve stacking for the free-spins round and fix the stacked symbol for its duration. Both are stated in the game's own information panel, and both describe presentation rather than payback.
