A race to points market asks which team or player will first reach a set number of points, goals, games or rounds — for example first to 20 points in basketball or first to 5 games in a tennis set. It settles the moment the threshold is hit, so it resolves long before the match ends.
Worked example: in a race to 20 points, the team you backed gets there first and the bet wins immediately, even if they go on to lose the game by 30.
If neither side reaches the number — a set ending 4-6 in a race-to-5 market, say — most books either void the bet or offer a "neither" selection, so check the rule before staking. Race markets are popular in-play, where prices move quickly and a bet can look very different within a minute.
