What is Volatility?

Volatility, also called variance, describes a slot's risk profile: how the same long-run return is delivered to the player. High-volatility slots pay infrequently but in large amounts, suiting players with a larger bankroll chasing big multipliers and prepared to absorb long dry spells. Low-volatility slots pay small wins often, suiting players who want extended playtime and steadier entertainment. Medium volatility sits between the two. Crucially, volatility is independent of RTP — two games can return the same percentage over millions of spins yet feel completely different session to session. Providers do not always disclose volatility officially, but it can be inferred from RTP, hit frequency (how often any win lands) and the advertised maximum win. A game with a 50,000× max win and a 20% hit rate is high volatility; one with a 500× cap and a 40% hit rate is low. Worked example: take two slots, both at 96% RTP. The low-volatility game might return a small win on roughly two in every five spins, so a £20 balance at £0.20 a spin lasts a long time. The high-volatility game might pay nothing for fifty spins, then return 200× the stake in one hit; the same £20 could vanish before the feature ever arrives. The common mistake is playing a high-volatility slot on a bankroll sized for a low-volatility one, then chasing losses to reach the bonus round.
