What is True Count?

True Count is a card-counting figure in blackjack calculated by dividing the running count by the number of decks still remaining in the shoe, converting a raw tally into a per-deck measure of how favourable the undealt cards are. Where the running count simply rises and falls as cards are dealt, the true count normalises that number so it accurately reflects the player's edge at any point in a multi-deck game — and it is the true count, not the running count, that dictates correct bet sizing and strategy deviations. The reason for the division is that a running count of +8 means something very different early in a six-deck shoe than it does near the end. Spread across six decks it barely tilts the odds; concentrated into one remaining deck it signals a strong player advantage. Each additional true-count point above pivot is worth roughly 0.5% of edge to the player. Worked example: you are playing a six-deck shoe and the running count reaches +9. Two decks have been dealt, so four remain. Dividing 9 by 4 gives a true count of +2.25, which rounds to +2. Starting from a house edge of about 0.5%, that +2 true count swings the game to roughly a +0.5% player edge, prompting you to raise your bet — for instance from a £10 baseline to £40 — and to take insurance only once the count justifies it. The common mistake is betting off the running count alone, which over-bets early and under-bets late.
