What is Basic Strategy?

Basic strategy in blackjack is the set of mathematically optimal decisions — hit, stand, double down, split or surrender — for every possible combination of your hand against the dealer's up card. It is derived from computer simulations of millions of hands, and each chart entry represents the play that yields the highest expected value for that exact situation. Playing perfect basic strategy reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5%, among the lowest of any casino game. The charts are freely available, legal to consult and, in many casinos, permitted at the table. Worked example: you hold a hard 16 and the dealer shows a 7. Instinct says 16 is fragile and standing feels safer, but basic strategy says hit. The dealer's 7 is likely to make a strong total (17 or better), so standing on 16 loses more often than it wins; hitting, despite the bust risk, loses less money over the long run. Conversely, hold 16 against a dealer's 6 and the correct play flips to stand, because the dealer is now likely to bust. Each decision is situation-specific, not a fixed rule about the hand alone. Why it matters: every deviation from basic strategy hands the casino additional edge. Over a session of hundreds of hands, "playing a hunch" quietly costs real money compared with the optimal baseline. Common mistake: making decisions on the player's total in isolation while ignoring the dealer's up card, which is the single most important input.
