Bust

Live Casino

Busting means exceeding 21 in blackjack. If the player busts, they lose immediately regardless of the dealer's outcome.

Busting in blackjack means your hand total exceeds 21, which immediately loses your bet — regardless of what the dealer subsequently holds. Because the player always acts before the dealer, busting is final the moment it happens: if you bust, you lose at once and the dealer need not even complete their hand. This sequencing is the single biggest structural disadvantage the player faces in blackjack. The danger zone is the "stiff" hand — a hard 12 through 16 — where drawing risks busting but standing leaves a total the dealer can easily beat. The right choice depends entirely on the dealer's up card, which signals how likely the dealer is to bust in turn. Worked example: you hold a hard 16. Against a dealer's 10, basic strategy says hit despite the bust risk, because standing on 16 loses too often to a dealer total of 20. Against a dealer's 6, however, you stand on the same 16: a 6 is the up card most likely to lead to a dealer bust, so you let the dealer take the drawing risk instead. The dealer busting is precisely the mechanism by which a modest standing hand wins. Why it matters: the player's bust-first rule is the source of the house edge in an otherwise near-even game. Every "play it safe and stand" or "chase 21 and hit" decision is really a calculation about who is more likely to bust. Common mistake: standing on stiff hands out of fear of busting when the dealer's strong up card demands a hit, or hitting hard hands when a weak dealer card means the bust risk should be left to the dealer. Let basic strategy, keyed to the dealer's card, govern the decision. Compare to: Basic Strategy, Blackjack.
