What is Dead Man's Hand?

Dead Man's Hand is the popular name for a specific five-card poker holding: two black aces (the ace of spades and the ace of clubs) and two black eights (the eight of spades and the eight of clubs), making two pair, aces and eights. The name derives from American frontier legend: it is said to be the hand held by Wild Bill Hickok, the gunfighter and lawman, when he was shot dead from behind during a poker game in Deadwood on 2 August 1876. The identity of his fifth card was never reliably recorded and remains disputed. Worked example of the hand in play: holding aces and eights as two pair is a genuinely strong starting two pair in a showdown, beating any single pair, any high-card hand, and any lower two pair, but losing to trips, straights, flushes, and better.
