Source of Funds Checks: What Casinos Ask For and Why

ByCasino Desk·Reviewed byKris Fawkes··4 min read

Short answer

Source of funds checks go beyond identity verification and ask where your money came from. Here is what triggers them, what documents satisfy them, and how to prepare.

Three Different Checks, Often Confused

Identity verification, usually called KYC, establishes that you are who you say you are. It is satisfied by a passport or national ID, a proof of address, and sometimes a photo of the payment card. It is a one-off gate, cleared at registration or before a first withdrawal.

A source of funds check asks a different question: where did this specific money come from? It concerns money moving into your gambling account, and is satisfied by documents showing income arriving and then being transferred. A source of wealth check goes further and asks how your overall financial position was built, a question about years rather than transactions.

The three are triggered differently and cleared with different evidence. Passing KYC tells the operator nothing about source of funds, which is why an account verified for a year can still be stopped when a large withdrawal is requested.

Why the Operator Cannot Simply Waive It

These checks are attached to the licence. In most regulated markets, licensed gambling operators are obliged entities under anti-money-laundering law: they must know the origin of customer funds, keep records, and report what they cannot explain. Several regulators also impose affordability and player-protection duties, so a pattern of deposits that looks unsustainable can prompt a request on its own.

This is the part players find hardest to accept, and it explains why arguing with support achieves nothing. The agent on the other end has no authority to waive the check. In many jurisdictions the operator is also barred from explaining why a review was opened, which reads as evasive and usually is not.

It also means the check is not a punishment for winning, even though it almost always arrives after a win. It is a threshold being crossed.

What Is Actually Requested

The usual list is narrow: recent payslips, bank statements covering several months, a tax return, or documentation of a specific event such as a property sale, a redundancy payment, an inheritance, or a business distribution. For crypto deposits the trail usually has to go back to the exchange and the fiat purchase behind it.

What matters most is continuity. The documents normally need to show the money arriving, then show it moving into the account or card used to deposit. A payslip alone rarely satisfies a reviewer, because it proves income without connecting it to the deposits under review. It is also why cropped images and screenshots are rejected: a full statement shows the account holder, the account number, the period and the balance, and a screenshot shows none of them.

A reasonable request names the documents it wants, gives a period, and explains the format. A request that simply demands proof of funds with no specification is worth pushing back on in writing.

The Part That Hurts, and What to Do About It

In practice the account is usually restricted while the review runs. Withdrawals are held, and on many sites deposits and play as well. Reviews take days, and longer when documents arrive in the wrong format and the cycle starts again.

The timing feels targeted because it is structural. Thresholds are commonly set on cumulative deposits, cumulative withdrawals or a single large cashout, so the request arrives when you most want the money. None of that is personal, and none of it can be argued away once triggered.

The only genuinely useful preparation is to assemble the documents before a large cashout rather than after: full statements as PDFs from the bank rather than screenshots, payslips or tax documents for the same period, and a clear line connecting income to deposits. You are entitled to a reason for the request, a stated timeframe, and an escalation route. If the goalposts keep moving or responses stop arriving, take it to the operator's complaints process and then to the dispute body named in its licence.

Before you act on this

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Gambling is entertainment, not a way to make money, and everything here assumes you are staking money you can afford to lose. Check the rules in your own market first, and set deposit and time limits before you play.
