Source of wealth is an anti-money-laundering check that requires a player to prove the legitimate origin of their overall accumulated wealth, not just where an individual deposit came from. It goes a level deeper than a source-of-funds request: rather than asking "where did this specific 2,000 pound deposit come from", it asks "how did you build the total pool of money you gamble with in the first place". Licensed operators trigger it for high-spending accounts as part of their AML and enhanced-due-diligence obligations. Acceptable evidence typically includes salary and payslips, business ownership or dividends, property sale proceeds, an inheritance, investment or pension income, or a documented lottery or crypto windfall. Operators cross-check that this declared wealth is broadly consistent with the amounts being staked. Worked example: a player deposits 3,000 pounds a month and, over a year, has staked 45,000 pounds. Their declared salary is 28,000 pounds gross. That mismatch flags an affordability and source-of-wealth review. The operator asks for 12 months of bank statements, a P60 and evidence of a 60,000 pound property-sale windfall from two years earlier. Until the documents reconcile with the play, withdrawals can be held and the account frozen. For players, the practical point is to keep records and respond promptly, because refusing or failing a source-of-wealth check is one of the most common reasons a large withdrawal is delayed or an account is closed with funds retained pending review.
