Self-Exclusion
RegulationSelf-exclusion allows players to voluntarily ban themselves from gambling for a set period or permanently. All licensed casinos must honor self-exclusion requests.
Self-exclusion is a responsible-gambling tool that lets a player voluntarily bar themselves from gambling for a defined period, commonly six months, one year or five years, and in some cases permanently. It is one of the strongest protective measures available, intended for people who recognise they need a firm barrier rather than a softer limit, and licensed operators are legally obliged to honour a request without delay.
Once a self-exclusion is in place, the operator must prevent the player from wagering for the chosen term and is expected to remove them from marketing. Crucially, the exclusion is not meant to be reversible on a whim during the period; that irreversibility is the point, since it removes the option to gamble in a moment of impulse. Many jurisdictions also run multi-operator schemes, such as GAMSTOP in Great Britain, which allow a single registration to exclude a player from a large number of licensed sites at once rather than site by site.
This distinguishes self-exclusion from the lighter controls in the responsible-gambling toolkit, such as deposit or time limits, which a player can adjust more freely. Self-exclusion is designed as a harder stop, and well-run schemes also place duties on operators not to open new accounts for, or send promotions to, anyone on the list.
The common pitfall is assuming that excluding from one operator covers everything. Single-site exclusion leaves every other gambling site open, which is why the multi-operator schemes exist and why combining them with device-level blocking software is often recommended. Self-exclusion works best as part of a wider plan that may include support services and financial controls, and anyone reaching for it should treat it as a serious, deliberate step rather than a temporary cooling-off measure.
