Spelinspektionen

Spelinspektionen is the Swedish Gambling Authority, the statutory body that licenses and supervises all commercial gambling in Sweden following the country's re-regulated online market, which launched on 1 January 2019. Any operator wishing to accept Swedish players must hold a Swedish licence, and the regime is built around a hard set of consumer-protection rules rather than a light-touch approach. Two features define the Swedish model. First, the national self-exclusion register Spelpaus lets a player block themselves from every licensed operator at once, and licensees must respect it. Second, temporary and standing responsible-gambling measures apply, including mandatory deposit and loss limits on some verticals and a rule that welcome bonuses may only be offered once per operator. Worked example: an SEK 100,000 first deposit means little in Sweden, because a licensed casino can legally offer a bonus to a given player only on their very first deposit and cannot chase them with reload offers. Licence fees also scale with the application; a full commercial online gambling and betting licence application costs SEK 700,000, and licences run for up to five years. An operator breaching the rules risks fines calculated as a percentage of turnover, up to a statutory cap. For affiliates, the practical point is that marketing Swedish-facing gambling must stay within Spelinspektionen's rules: promote only licence holders, respect the one-bonus limit, and avoid targeting self-excluded users.
