A stake limit is a regulatory or operator-imposed cap on the maximum amount a player can wager on a single spin or bet, introduced primarily to reduce gambling-related harm. The best-known example is Great Britain's statutory cap on online slots, where the UK Gambling Commission set a maximum stake of £5 per spin for adults aged 25 and over, and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24, phased in during 2025. Land-based fixed-odds betting terminals were cut to £2 per spin in 2019 under the same harm-reduction logic.
Stake limits differ from a deposit limit or a loss limit, which cap totals over a period rather than the size of an individual wager. They also differ from operator table maximums, which exist to manage the house's risk rather than to protect the player.
Worked example: on a slot with a 96% RTP, staking £5 per spin at 10 spins per minute puts £3,000 through the game in an hour, with an expected theoretical loss of £120 (4% of £3,000). Under the £2 youth cap, the same session cycles £1,200 with an expected loss of £48 — a 60% reduction in exposure from the stake cap alone.
For players, a stake limit is a built-in guardrail that caps worst-case losses per bet. For affiliates, it is essential to confirm which jurisdiction's limits apply before publishing stake-related claims, as caps vary by market and product. Compare with deposit limit, loss limit, betting limit and responsible gambling.
