A book slot is a family of games built on one mechanic: a single symbol acts as both scatter and wild, and when the free spins round begins, one symbol is drawn at random to expand. That expanding symbol fills its whole reel for the rest of the round and pays wherever it lands, rather than only on adjacent reels. The shape of the round follows from that. Nearly everything depends on which symbol is drawn — a high-value one turns a handful of spins into the game's biggest wins, a low-value one usually returns very little — and on whether the round retriggers.
