What is Hole Card (Blackjack)?

In blackjack the hole card is the dealer's face-down card. Peek and no-hole-card rules change when it is revealed and what a player can lose on the hand.

What it means in practice

In blackjack the hole card is the dealer's face-down card, dealt alongside the face-up up card. Its value stays unknown to the table until the dealer's turn to act, and the whole structure of the game rests on that missing information: every decision is a judgement made against one visible card and one hidden one. Under peek rules, a dealer showing an ace or a ten-value card checks the hole card immediately and settles the hand at once if it is a blackjack, which caps what players can lose on that round. Under no-hole-card, or European, rules the second card arrives only after players have finished acting, so doubles and splits can be lost to a dealer blackjack. In community-card poker the term hole cards means something different: a player's own private cards.

Why it matters

A definition like this one decides what an offer is actually worth. The same wording turns up in bonus terms, on payment pages and in game rules, and it is usually where a promotion’s real cost is hiding — so it is worth reading an operator’s own terms with this meaning in mind rather than the marketing above them.

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Understanding a term does not make an outcome more likely: casino games are built to return less than they take over time. Set deposit and time limits before you play.
