Problem Gambling

Problem gambling describes gambling that is causing harm to a person's finances, relationships, work or health, whether or not it meets a clinical diagnosis. Health classifications use narrower terms such as gambling disorder; in regulation and support services the broader phrase covers the whole spectrum of harm. Commonly cited signs include betting more than intended, chasing losses with larger stakes, borrowing or hiding spending, restlessness when trying to cut down, and gambling to escape low mood. Harm is not defined by the amount staked: what matters is the effect on the person and those around them. Licensed operators are expected to offer tools such as deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and to signpost independent help lines and counselling, which are free and confidential in most countries.
