Smart Contract

Crypto

A smart contract is a self-executing blockchain program that automatically processes gambling transactions — removing the need for human intermediaries.

A smart contract is a self-executing program deployed on a blockchain — most commonly Ethereum — that automatically processes a transaction once predefined conditions are met, with no intermediary required. In gambling, smart contracts can automate bet settlement, jackpot distribution and payouts, removing the need to trust an operator to pay out manually. Decentralised prediction and betting protocols such as Augur and Polymarket use them to create trustless markets where the rules live in publicly inspectable code. The appeal is transparency and provable fairness: anyone can read the contract, verify the payout logic and confirm that funds are released exactly as written. Many provably fair crypto-casino games combine a smart contract with a cryptographic seed so a player can independently check that a result was not tampered with. Worked example: two users stake 1 ETH each on a coin-flip contract. The code holds both deposits in escrow, draws a verifiable random result, then sends the full 2 ETH to the winner automatically — settlement happens in one block with no cashier and no withdrawal request. The critical caveat is that 'trustless' is not the same as 'risk-free'. A bug in the code is permanent and exploitable, the underlying contract may be unaudited, and many such platforms operate outside any licensed jurisdiction, so there is no regulator to appeal to if funds are lost. On-chain bets are also irreversible. Treat code quality, audit status and legality in your jurisdiction as the real risks. See also crypto-casino and wrapped-token.
