What is Private Key?

A private key is the secret cryptographic code that authorises spending from a crypto wallet, and whoever holds it controls the funds. It is a long, randomly generated number, usually represented as a string of letters and digits, that mathematically corresponds to your public wallet address. Anyone with the key can move the balance, so it must never be shared, screenshotted, or typed into an untrusted site. The private key signs each transaction, proving you own the coins without revealing the key itself. Because the underlying blockchain has no support desk and no password reset, a lost private key means the funds are gone permanently, and a stolen key means an irreversible theft. This is the meaning behind the phrase "not your keys, not your coins." Worked example: suppose you win 0.05 BTC at a crypto casino, worth roughly £2,500 at a price of £50,000 per coin. You withdraw it to a self-custody wallet whose private key you alone hold. If you back that key up securely offline, you keep full control of the £2,500. If you save it in a phone note that is later compromised, an attacker can sweep the entire balance in one signed transaction, with no chargeback and no recourse. Practical context: on most licensed crypto casinos you never see a private key, because the operator custodies funds and you simply hold an account balance. You only manage a key when you use your own non-custodial wallet, where the security burden shifts entirely to you.
