What is Seed Phrase?

A seed phrase is a human-readable list of 12 to 24 ordinary words that acts as the master backup for a cryptocurrency wallet, capable of restoring the wallet and all its funds on any compatible device. Also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic, it encodes the wallet's underlying private keys in a standardised word list (usually the 2,048-word BIP-39 set). Whoever holds the phrase controls the coins outright, so it must be kept secret and never entered into a website, chat, or app that requests it. For a crypto-gambling player, the seed phrase matters most when using a non-custodial wallet to deposit at a Bitcoin or crypto casino. The casino never sees your phrase; it only sees the wallet address you send from. Losing the phrase, or having it stolen, means losing every coin the wallet holds, with no support desk able to reverse it. Worked example: you set up a 12-word wallet, write the words on paper, and fund it with 0.05 BTC. Say Bitcoin trades at $60,000, so the wallet holds roughly $3,000. Your phone breaks, but by entering the same 12 words into a new wallet app you fully restore the $3,000 balance. If a scammer instead obtains those 12 words, they can sweep the entire 0.05 BTC in one transaction, and the on-chain transfer is irreversible. Store the phrase offline, never photograph it, and treat any casino or "support agent" asking for it as a scam. Compare with private key, cold wallet, hot wallet and non-custodial wallet.
