What is Top Slot?

A top slot is a small two-reel slot mounted above the wheel of a live game show, spun once before every round. One reel selects a bet segment and the other selects a multiplier. If the two line up, that multiplier is attached to that segment for the round about to be played; if the wheel then lands there, the multiplier applies to the bets on it. Crazy Time is the game the mechanic is best known from, and the sequence there is worth following carefully because it decides who benefits. The top slot spins after bets close. It does not choose a winner and it does not change the wheel. It changes the value of one segment for one round, and only for players who happened to back that segment. The effect on a player's own return is therefore conditional twice over. The pair has to land — the two reels frequently stop out of alignment, in which case nothing is enhanced at all — and then the wheel has to stop on the enhanced segment, and you have to have bet on it. Three conditions in sequence, each independent of the others. This is worth understanding because a top slot is what a stream is built around. A large multiplier appearing above a bonus segment is the moment a broadcast is edited to, and the moment a clip is cut from. What a viewer sees is the small share of rounds where all three conditions met. What the maths behind the table describes is every round, including the great majority where the reels missed, or the wheel went elsewhere, or the enhanced segment was one nobody at the table had backed.
