What is Gambling Advertising Standards?

Gambling advertising standards govern how betting is promoted: no appeal to minors, no misleading win claims, and clear bonus terms.

What it means in practice

Gambling advertising standards are the rules that govern how betting and casino products may be promoted. They exist in every regulated market, usually as a mix of licence conditions, advertising codes and general consumer law, and the detail differs sharply by country. Recurring themes are consistent, though: adverts must not target or strongly appeal to children, must not present gambling as a solution to money problems or a path to social success, must not misrepresent the chance of winning, and must state bonus conditions clearly rather than burying them. Many markets also restrict where and when ads can appear and require a safer-gambling message. Affiliates and influencers are generally covered too, because the operator remains responsible for marketing carried out on its behalf.

Why it matters

A definition like this one decides what an offer is actually worth. The same wording turns up in bonus terms, on payment pages and in game rules, and it is usually where a promotion’s real cost is hiding — so it is worth reading an operator’s own terms with this meaning in mind rather than the marketing above them.

You must be of legal gambling age where you live — 18 in most markets, 19 or 21 in others. Understanding a term does not make an outcome more likely: casino games are built to return less than they take over time. Set deposit and time limits before you play.
