DGOJ (Spain)

The DGOJ (Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego) is Spain's national gambling regulator, the body that licenses online gambling operators and enforces the country's rules on advertising, taxation and player protection. Sitting under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, it issues the general and singular licences required to offer sports betting, casino, poker, bingo and contests to Spanish residents, and it polices those operators through the .es domain regime. Operating without a DGOJ licence, or marketing an unlicensed brand to Spanish players, is illegal. Spain is best known for its severe advertising restrictions. The 2020 Royal Decree on gambling advertising banned welcome and sign-up bonuses for new players, restricted gambling adverts on TV and radio to a 1am–5am window, and barred celebrity and sports-sponsorship endorsements, leaving operators far less room to promote offers than in most European markets. Worked example: an affiliate running a Spanish-facing site must confirm every listed operator holds a current DGOJ licence, verifiable on the regulator's public register at ordenacionjuego.es, and must not advertise a new-player welcome bonus, because such offers are prohibited to non-registered users. A '100% up to €200' promotion legal in the UK cannot lawfully headline a Spanish page. Adverts must also carry age (18+) and responsible-gambling messaging. Why it matters: the DGOJ fines and sanctions both operators and marketers who breach its bonus and advertising limits, and its rules differ sharply from lighter-touch jurisdictions.
