The jackpot seed is the amount a progressive jackpot resets to after it has been won. A progressive counter never returns to zero: it drops back to a seed funded in advance, and then starts climbing again on player contributions from that floor.
The seed is set aside from earlier play rather than donated by the operator. A slice of every stake goes into the pool, and part of that slice funds the current jackpot while part funds the seed of the next one. That is why a jackpot that has just dropped still shows a substantial figure the moment it resets.
The consequence for a player is a change in value, not in chance. On most progressive designs the probability of triggering the jackpot is fixed and does not care how large the pot is, so a jackpot sitting at its seed is exactly as likely to hit as one near its record — it is simply worth less when it does. The exception is a must-drop jackpot, where the trigger is tied to a time or value ceiling and the odds genuinely shift as the deadline approaches.
Two seed figures are worth reading before playing: the seed itself, which tells you the floor, and the game's published return, which includes the jackpot contribution. A headline RTP that counts a jackpot most players will never win is not the return most players will see.
