What is Nonce?

In provably fair gambling, the nonce is a simple counter that increments by one with every bet a player places. It is one of three inputs — alongside the server seed and the client seed — that are combined through a cryptographic hash function, typically SHA-256, to generate the outcome of each game round. The word nonce means a number used once in this context, and its role is to guarantee that every result is distinct even when the seeds remain unchanged. Worked example: a player sets a client seed and the casino commits to a hashed server seed in advance. On the first bet the nonce is 0, on the second it is 1, on the third it is 2, and so on. Each round's result is derived by hashing the server seed, the client seed and the current nonce together. Because the nonce differs every time, bet number 50 produces a completely different outcome from bet number 51, even though both share the same two seeds. Once the server seed is later revealed, the player can re-run the hash for any past bet — feeding in its nonce, the now-public server seed and their client seed — and confirm the result was not manipulated. Why it matters: the nonce is what makes per-bet verification possible, turning fairness from a matter of trust into something a player can independently check. The common misunderstanding is to think the nonce somehow influences the odds or can be exploited for an edge; it does not and cannot.
